United Nations(and) International Day of Remembrance of the Dignity of Victims of Genocide and the prevention of this crime are commemorated annually globally December 9 Commemorating the victims of genocide and the anniversary of the Genocide Convention.
- December 9, 2022 marks the No. 74 Anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (‘genocide convention‘), the first human rights treaty, formulated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
background:
A generation. The General Assembly passed a resolution A/RES/69/323 11 September 2015 and proclaimed 9 December each year as the International Day of Remembrance for the Dignity of Victims of Genocide and the Prevention of Such Crimes.

What is genocide?
A generation. The term “genocide” (meaning “to kill”) was first coined in 1944 by Polish lawyer Raphäel Lemkin in his book Axis Domination in Occupied Europe.
two. In 1946, the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/96-I) for the first time made genocide a crime under international law.
three. It was later listed as a separate crime in the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Genocide Convention:
A generation. The convention represents the international community’s commitment to “never again” and contains the first international legal definition of “genocide”, which has been widely adopted at the national and international levels.
two. It also imposes an obligation on States parties to prevent and punish the crime of genocide.
three. The Convention affirms that genocide, whether committed in peacetime or in war, is a crime under international law, and the parties to the Convention undertake to “prevent and punish” it (Article 1).

To prevent genocide:
A generation. The United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect has developed an analytical framework to identify some of the main risk factors for atrocity crimes.
two. Under international law, States have the primary obligation to prevent atrocity crimes.
The 3 pillars of the responsibility to protect:
I- Every country has a responsibility to protect its people;
II- The international community has a duty to assist States in protecting their peoples;
three- The international community’s responsibility to protect when a state clearly fails to protect its people.
